Variety Description

Kufri Chipbharat-1 (designation MP/12-126) is a newly released processing-type potato variety developed by the ICAR-Central Potato Research Institute (CPRI), Shimla. Officially launched on July 22, 2025. it has been specially bred for the potato chip industry to address the low percentage of processed potatoes in India. 

This variety stands out due to its high dry matter content, ranging between 21–24%, and very low reducing sugar levels (<0.1%), which are critical for producing light-colored, crisp, and high-quality chips with minimal defects. Its chip defect rate is reported to be under 15%, with undesirable coloration staying below 5%, ensuring superior appearance and taste.

Agronomically, Kufri Chipbharat-1 is a medium-maturing variety with a high yield potential of over 30 tonnes per hectare, making it suitable for major potato-growing regions across the country. 

Kufri Chipbharat-1 represents a major advancement in India's push to increase its potato processing capacity and reduce dependency on imported chip-grade varieties, while also supporting domestic industry with a reliable, high-performance cultivar.
