Avamond is a potato variety developed for use in the production of flakes and granules (i.e. dried potato products). It offers a good balance of yield and processing quality, especially in systems where nitrogen input and cost efficiency are important.
Characteristics
- Primary use: Processing into flakes and granules
- Nitrogen requirement: Low, efficient with fertilizer input
- Yield: Good overall yield with moderate starch content
- Disease tolerance: Tolerant to potato fatigue and wart disease; moderate resistance to foliage and tuber diseases
- Late blight resistance: Moderate, not highly resistant
- Storage ability: Suitable for medium-term storage, but prone to sprouting during long storage
- Strengths: Reliable yield, cost-efficient, good for processing industries
Tuber Characteristics
- Tuber shape: Large, round-oval
- Tuber size / number per plant: High tuber count with good size, suitable for seed and starch production
- Eye depth: Medium
- Flesh colour: Yellow
- Starch content: Approximately 18–19%
- Skin / blemish sensitivity: Low sensitivity to skin damage, clean appearance, low rot susceptibility
- Storage behaviour: Good for medium-term storage, but prone to sprouting in longer storage
- Mechanical damage / harvest robustness: Resistant to damage during harvest
- Other notes: Regular tuber set, favourable for seed production
