McCain Farmdex reveals mounting pressure on British farms - 74% pessimistic, 51% considering exit—yet tech and regenerative practices are rising; McCain urges policy clarity, fair trade, and long-term backing for family farms.
British farmers face growing uncertainty, McCain’s Farmdex reveals

British farmers face mounting pressures amid economic uncertainty, policy shifts, and unpredictable weather — with nearly three-quarters expressing pessimism about the industry’s future, according to McCain Foods’ inaugural Farmdex Report.
The Farmdex provides a national snapshot of farming life across the UK, capturing the emotional, financial, and operational realities faced by farmers today. Drawing input from livestock and arable producers alike, it measures key indicators such as financial confidence, wellbeing, and intent to exit the industry.
Half of UK farmers consider leaving the industry
According to the report, 51% of farmers have considered leaving agriculture in the past year due to financial pressures, while only 4% believe current government support is sufficient. An overwhelming 95% expect a decline in family-run farms over the next decade if current trends continue.
Family farms under strain but remain at the heart of British agriculture
Family remains central to UK agriculture: 83% of farmers work with relatives, and 60% rely on family support to keep their businesses afloat. Yet, 61% report that work pressures harm their mental health, and 36% work more than 70 hours per week during peak seasons.
Innovation and sustainability offer hope for the future
Despite the challenges, the report highlights strong resilience and a forward-looking mindset among farmers. 68% view investment in technology as essential to the sector’s future, and 71% already implement sustainable practices such as crop rotation, reduced tillage, and precision farming. Many are also diversifying into agritourism and renewable energy — though high upfront costs and regulatory complexity remain major hurdles.
McCain calls for united action to support UK farmers
In response to these findings, McCain is calling for greater cross-sector collaboration and urging government and industry leaders to:
- Support regenerative agriculture to boost food security and profitability
- Prioritize long-term national food security
- Provide clear and stable agricultural policy direction
- Safeguard the future of family farms
- Secure fair trade agreements that protect domestic agriculture
James Young, VP Agriculture at McCain GB&I:
Farming is the foundation of Britain’s food system, and its importance to our economy and food security cannot be overstated. Farmers across the UK face complex challenges yet continue to demonstrate unwavering resilience.
As a company founded by farmers, we’re proud to stand alongside our 250 growers across the UK and remain committed to ensuring the long-term sustainability of British agriculture.
Since 2020, we have invested an additional £100 million into our grower base. But we can’t do it alone — government, industry, and business must work together to heed the warning signs in the Farmdex and take action to support farmers.
