Seed Potato Areas in Western Europe Surge 9.5% in 2025, Driven by Processing and Export Varieties

Seed potato production is expanding strongly in Western Europe. In 2025, total production areas across the six main seed potato–producing countries reached 106,864 hectares, representing an increase of 9,297 hectares compared to 2024 (+9.53%).
The Netherlands, France, and Germany remain the leaders, concentrating 80% of all seed potato areas in the region.
According to industry experts, the most dynamic growth is observed in varieties destined for processing (French fries and other industrial uses) as well as those intended for export (particularly open varieties). This confirms the strategic importance of seed potatoes within the European potato sector.
The expansion highlights the sector’s ability to adapt swiftly to market demand while addressing broader food security challenges.
