Forgotten variety, new love and a taste that brings back memories. The potato variety 'Sieglinde' is a real classic and has shaped Austrian cuisine for almost 100 years. For a long time, it had disappeared from the shelves at home.

Priska and Erich Stekovics are passionately committed to the preservation of tried and tested varieties as well as the taste of the past and have revived this traditional potato variety in Austria. Under SPAR, as in the past, the waxy organic potatoes Sieglinde are now available for 1.99 euros (USD 2.15) at SPAR, EUROSPAR and INTERSPAR.

With the return to old, forgotten varieties, SPAR is setting an example for sustainability and culinary diversity with the "SPAR like in the past" brand. The organic potatoes of the "Sieglinde" variety are not only a pleasure, but also a contribution to the variety of varieties in the local fields. Thanks to dedicated producers, such as the Stekovics family, the taste of bygone times now lives on and enriches our cuisine.

Commitment to diversity

Erich and Priska Stekovics from Burgenland have been committed to the preservation and revival of forgotten varieties for years and have rediscovered the traditional potato variety "Sieglinde".

Erich Stekovics, organic farmer and SPAR partner:

"The idea of cultivating the variety came from my positive memory. In the history of potatoes, there has been no more well-known variety than Sieglinde. Because in the past, people didn't say that they were going to buy potatoes, but they said 'I'm going to buy Sieglinde.' A sentence that you hardly hear in everyday language today."

The potato variety "Sieglinde" had disappeared from Austria for a long time. And this despite the fact that it has shaped Austrian cuisine for almost 100 years in classic dishes such as potato salad, dumplings or fried potatoes.

Erich Stekovics:

"The variety was long considered forgotten – the challenges in cultivation were too great, because especially with a lot of rain, for example, there is a higher risk of crop failures than is the case with other varieties. With our revival of 'Sieglinde', we not only want to preserve a culinary treasure, but also bring back the incomparably delicious taste of our childhood. Thanks to the support of SPAR, we are able to implement this project that is close to our hearts."

Organic quality from Austria's best growing regions

SPAR, like Sieglinde organic potatoes in the past, grow under optimal conditions in the fertile regions of Marchfeld, Seewinkel and Waldviertel. Gentle treatment underlines the respectful handling of a valuable food. The "Sieglinde" variety is a real potato all-rounder - whether boiled, fried or as a salad. It impresses with its finely aromatic taste and slightly greasy consistency.
