La aerolínea holandesa KLM efectuará un vuelo semanal entre Nueva York y Amsterdam propulsado con biocombustible producido a partir de aceite para freír recuperado en restaurantes, según anunció la compañía.
Cada jueves, un Boeing 777 conectará el aeropuerto John F. Kennedy de la ciudad estadounidense con el de Schiphol utilizando este tipo de biocombustible sostenible, en un vuelo al que la prensa holandesa se refiere ya como el "vuelo de las papas fritas", en alusión al origen del carburante.
El primer vuelo de prueba se llevó a cabo el viernes con dirección a Nueva York, después de numerosos ensayos llevados a cabo por KLM dentro de su programa de biocombustibles.
El pasado año, la aerolínea holandesa ya hizo un vuelo de prueba entre Amsterdam y Río de Janeiro basado en esa misma tecnología, en un intento de mejorar la eficiencia y reducir las emisiones contaminantes.
