The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) is a non-profit research-for-development organization headquartered in Ibadan, Nigeria, with stations across Africa. Founded in 1967 and part of the CGIAR network, IITA works to enhance food security, reduce poverty, and safeguard natural resources in tropical regions through innovative agricultural research.
IITA focuses on a wide range of staple crops including cassava, yam, plantain, banana, maize, cowpea, soybean, sweet potato, and potato. While not exclusively dedicated to potatoes, the institute incorporates them into its roots and tubers program, developing improved varieties, combating pests such as Potato Cyst Nematode, and supporting better production practices.
Through partnerships with governments, NGOs, research bodies, and the private sector, IITA delivers science-based solutions to farmers across Africa. Its work combines crop breeding, pest and disease management, biotechnology, and capacity building, aiming for sustainable agriculture and improved livelihoods.
